Kurt Wenner – The Man Behind The Incredible Illusions

Make sure you’re at the Jubilee Hall, Watershed from 4th April for the opening of the Incredible Illusions exhibition, a selfie opportunity not to be missed. Incredible illusions is an art expo of 3D art, the brainchild of well-known 3D pavement artist, Kurt Wenner. “Who is this Kurt Wenner?,” you ask? Read on to find out.

Kurt Wenner first got a taste of the art world when he was commissioned to produce his first artwork, a mural, at the age of 16; soon after he was earning a living as a graphic artist. He attended both Rhode Island School of Design and Art Center College of Design in the United States, before working for NASA, where he was an advanced scientific illustrator, creating conceptual paintings of future space projects and extraterrestrial landscapes.

Fast forward to 1986 Wenner first introduced 3D pavement art at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Shortly after that, he founded the first street painting festival in the United States at the Old Mission in Santa Barbara, California. The Old Mission festival, also known as I Madonnari, continues to this day as do many other festivals and events Wenner started across the country. The artist has since opened the first museum of his works, in 2015, at Playa da Carmen near Cancun, a permanent museum that has in its first full year of operation become a major tourist attraction, Incredible Illusions is a travelling and immersive version of this museum.
