On Wednesday, the 9th of December, an art gallery dedicated to art by children will be opening at the V&A. A space has been donated by the V&A Food Market to house work by children and create awareness for The Colour Collaboration, an organisation that provides art education, art materials and mentorship for at-risk young kids, helping them to stay on productive paths. The Colour Collaboration delivers art resources and offers children mentorship and coaching from established artists. The Children’s Gallery will provide a platform for these children to share their art with the public – something which instils pride and purpose.
We’d love it if you could join us in on the 9th for a formal gallery opening with Benon Lutaaya, who will be sharing his personal story of how art transformed his life.
And in case you don’t know who Benon Lutaaya is…
The Art times has just named him 1 of the TOP 4 ARTISTS under 40 whose work to invest in NOW. He was named ‘Bright Young Thing’ in South African Visual Arts by Art South Magazine – 2015. Winner of the 2015 ‘Face of African Youth’ at the ADLER Entrepreneurship Awards in Germany, Benon is also a winner of the South African Arts and Culture Trust Impact Award 2015.
Benon’s shows sell out before opening and he has a collectors’ waiting list that spans years. To celebrate the opening of the Children’s Gallery, Benon has created five original works for sale on the opening night only. He embodies the essence of the Children’s Gallery and Colour Collaboration – that art can uplift and transform disadvantaged young lives. When Benon started out, he was unable to afford proper art supplies and so he improvised with found and recycled paper gathered off the streets. This developed into his now preferred medium of paper collage.
He is a 2016 recipient of the European-based international Artist Residence award by the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art.
He is a winner of the Lovell Tranyr Art Trophy, a recipient of the Ithuba Arts Fund grant, the Bag Factory International Artist residency award, as well as a finalist of the BBC MyWorld Documentary global competition – London.
His work has featured in a number of top local and International media including Reuters TV, Mail and Guardian, Business Day, The Times, The Citizen & Finweek.
See you on the 9th! Otherwise soon after. The V&A Food Market is open daily from 10am to 7pm.
